Riverlore for Virginia Folk Life Program

Illustration and event visual design commissioned by Katy Clune, Director of the Virginia Folklife Program, for the largest folk festival in Virginia. The artwork celebrates the culture and ecology of the James River and was adapted into multiple orientations for web, jumbo screens, site signage, print posters, and festival merchandise. Displayed across the full festival grounds and viewed by a wide, diverse audience.

The illustration highlights the stories and ecology of the James River, featuring wildlife, river traditions, and a leaping sturgeon as a key focal point. The “Riverlore” title was designed using a fishing line concept that integrates naturally into the composition.

The poster and supporting visuals were adapted into multiple orientations and formats to accommodate various digital and on site needs. Deliverables included festival jumbo screens, site welcome banners, print posters, web headers, sticker sheets, and a coloring page version. Each layout was adjusted for clarity, visibility, and scale while maintaining a consistent visual language.

This collaboration involved close communication with the Virginia Folklife team to ensure accuracy in species depiction, cultural details, and storytelling. The final work served as the primary visual touchpoint for the festival’s theme and was displayed prominently throughout the event.
